Obedience

Benefits of obedience training

Every dog should know a basic number of commands in order to function well in daily life. As in Showmanship, basic obedience is also a must to earn a Canine Good Citizen certification. Showing in obedience hones your dog’s skills in the presence of distractions.

Start with the “Big Five”

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Heel (loose leash walking, with turns)
  • Recall

There is also a stand or sit for exam in some obedience tests.

Start simple, and as you train, raise criteria to achieve the picture you want for a longer period of time. Always release the dog from position when finished – that way he always knows how long to stay. Be clear and positive. If your dog doesn’t do the move, show hime or her the right answer so you can reward. Whatever you do, have fun!

Here is an example of an obedience scorecard.
